Whether you operate an entertainment or sports venue, there’s no shortage of risk management considerations that must be made during every single event and long after the crowds have gone home. Whether it’s keeping people safe from minor injuries and major attacks or making sure anybody working on the venue is fully compliant with health and safety regulations, there’s certainly a lot to keep in mind. We’ve listed some of the most important factors to think about.
1. Crowd Safety:
Whether it’s a football game or a concert, everyone’s safety is paramount when there are crowds of people together in one space. Events such as sports matches, music festivals and gigs cause thousands of injuries per year, many of which could often have been prevented by tighter health and safety standards. If food and drinks are involved, slips, trips, and falls tend to be a common occurrence, meaning that it’s vital to have well-maintained grounds and ample cleaners for each event. In addition to hiring enough stewards for each event to ensure the public’s safety, you should also ensure that you have adequate public liability insurance before opening your doors.
2. Staff Safety:
It’s not just the customers and spectators that you need to think about – keeping the people that work for you safe at all times should always be a top priority. Bear in mind that even if you only employ people under contract or on a part-time or casual basis, you’ll still need to ensure that they are covered by employer’s liability insurance. Different health and safety rules will need to be in place depending on the type of job each person or team does. For example, those serving food should be required to wear a uniform that complies with health and safety standards and they must be fully trained on any machines and equipment that they will use as part of their job. If you contract construction workers to complete work on your site, ensure that they have access to the proper health and safety equipment, such as hard hats. Fall protection for the construction industry is also hugely important and nobody should ever be allowed to work at height without it.
3. Terrorism Insurance:
Whilst it’s a nasty possibility to think about, the sad fact is that sporting and events stadiums are a major target for terrorists. Even if you operate a smaller venue, it’s still crucial to be aware of the risk – it’s not just large, international events that are targeted. Whatever the size of your venue and no matter what kind of events you hold, it’s important to be prepared for a terrorist attack with the right kind of insurance policy. Commercial terrorism insurance policies will protect your venue against any damaged or completely destroyed property, including any buildings, equipment, and other venue content. You can also claim against this policy to earn back any losses if your venue is forced to close for a prolonged period of time as the result of an attack. You can usually tailor this kind of policy according to the scale of your business.
